Research and Development > Testing > EMEC
For several reasons the UK market is attractive for marine technology developers and the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has been established to give developers an opportunity to test their technologies. This test facility was also selected by Hammerfest Strøm for testing in harsh waters, with greater impact from turbulence and waves.
In cooperation with ScottishPower Renewables, we have installed a 1MW pre commercial tidal power turbine, named HS1000, at EMEC. The HS1000 device has been deployed at the Falls of Warness site close to Eday Island in 2011 for testing and product certification.
This facility is prepared in cooperation with ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) who has undertaken Environmental Impact Assessment on the site. The cooperation with SPR will continue in a pre-commercial array project planned for the Sound of Islay (ten HS1000 devices) and also on a large-scale 95MW commercial array in Pentland Firth.
